Reconnecting Generations

Here at Ableworld, we are proud to be able to have taken our first steps in Reconnecting Generations in the North West of the UK.

We know there is plenty of research confirming that bringing generations together can and should be the way forward. We live in a society where care of young and old is increasingly segregated, with very limited opportunities for the two groups to interact. This is why we are pleased that we have been able to help. Our first event took place in October 2017 at Woodeaves Residential Home in Nantwich. We invited the local children from Sunflowers Nursery to come and join the residents for an hour, allowing the two groups to play together and enjoy each others company. We also took the opportunity to invite Rhythm Time Cheshire to come in and play some music, and sing songs together with the residents and the children thoroughly enjoyed. Please watch our short video, showing how the day went and how much everyone involved enjoyed themselves.

Dementia Friends

At Ableworld we are very proud to be part of the Alzheimer's Society's Dementia Friends programme. Dementia is a varied disease that can affect different people in different ways, and often it is hard to spot the varied symptoms.

The Dementia Friends iniative aims to change the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about dementia through easy to understand and friendly training sessions. With a number of Dementia Champions within the business, here at Ableworld we are working hard towards making many of our staff members Dementia Friends. By being a Dementia Friend all of our staff understand a little bit more about what it's like to live with Dementia, and then turn that understanding into action.

An action that we are constantly implementing is to bring in more and more new products into our stores each week that are Dementia Friendly, and having the Dementia Friendly knowledgable staff to sell these products is key. Ableworld run a monthly program of Dementia Friends Information Sessions which all new new staff are encouraged to attend.

Abena Continence Care Events

Within our stores we occasionally hold Continence Care Awareness events, whereby with the assistance of a local Abena qualified nurse, we give advice and help for anyone wh suffers or cares for somene with a bladder or bowel dysfunction. During the sessions we can show you the continence products that we have available, and how the different styles benefit different people. There is also plenty of opportunity to ask us any questions you may have. These events are very casual and informal, and are all held within store so you can have a browse at our product ranges too whilst at the event.

Ableworld feature on ITV National News

After a sharp increase in Mobility Scooter fatalities pressure is mounting on the Government to impose stricter regulations on mobility scooters.

At Ableworld as we have always demonstrated an ethical approach to selling and the introduction 4 years ago of our Scooter Proficiency Sessions, Ableworld were approached by ITV National News to talk about Mobility Scooter Safety.

The segment included a Scooter Proficiency Session at Pickmere Nursing Home in Crewe with residents riding on the Test Track accompanied by Store Manager Darren Evans, Engineer, Mark Burrows carrying out safety checks on the scooters and a short interview from Senior Marketing Manager, Michelle Mossford talking about the importance of the training sessions.

The ITV News segment was aired recently on the 6.30pm and 10pm National News, and although approximately 4 hours of filming turned into a short 3 minute segment it was well worth it as it was the first time Ableworld had ever featured on National TV.

Please watch the News segment to the right or continue reading to see upcoming Scooter Proficiency sessions.

Ableworld Take Great Pride in Sponsoring Local Charities and Partnerships!

Ableworld & South Cheshire College Working in Partnership

Ableworld have teamed up with South Cheshire College to launch a Skills Development Academy which will benefit students and the local community.

A former classroom has been transformed into a replica hospital ward and an elderly person’s house and the area will give students the chance to carry out lots of practical work and learn more about hospital and domiciliary care.

The facility, on floor one of the College’s West building, has been decked out with hospital beds, infection control equipment, a hoist along with a reclining bath, a wet room, a rise and recline chair and a stair lift.

Ableworld is sponsoring this fantastic new initiative which will be a huge boost for BTEC Health and Social Care students and it will also help the College to develop the range of Higher Education courses on offer, including the HNC and HND in Health and Social Care.

Within this training facility there will be a dedicated area for care in the home and dementia care training. The main aim of this facility is to train the future health and social care workforce and also to work with the wider community.

Wheelyboat Project

The Overwater Wheelyboat project is an exciting service, which is situated in Audlem, Cheshire.

This project offers an enriching life experience to disabled children and adults. The boat provides free boat trips on the Shropshire Union Canal, one of the most scenic canals in the country which gives freedom on the water for disabled people of all ages. More recently, in January 2019, there was the launch of the Wheelybus, which has been designed to transport people to the boat moored at Overwater Marina. The bus can accommodate four people in wheelchairs with carers, and or up to 12 people.

Ableworld are proud sponsors of such a worthwhile project and we always look forward to working closely alongside.

CVS Partnership

CVS Cheshire East provides a wide range of support and services to groups, helping those that are starting up, as well as organisations that are already established. They are committed to equal opportunities and to making our services relevant and accessible to smaller groups. They are an independent organisation supporting the development of a vibrant, effective and influential voluntary and community sector across Cheshire East.

Cheshire Voluntary Services (CVS) Cheshire East also supports networks and partnership working and has an intermediary role, supporting and facilitating joint working between voluntary and community groups and with statutory bodies; and helping to ensure that the interests and concerns of the voluntary and community sector are properly represented. In addition to supporting groups, they also support individuals who wish to become volunteers and those already involved in volunteering. Ableworld work in close partnership with CVS and will continue throughout the year.

Shropshire Partners in Care (SPIC)

SPIC represents independent providers of care to the adults of Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin. Their main purpose is to support the development of a high quality social care sector in these areas. SPIC currently represents 93% of all adult care provider services across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin. Ableworld have been working with SPIC for the past few years and supporting them at local events.
