Keep safe this Bonfire Night

This entry was posted in General November 1, 2022

people watching the fireworks display

Can you believe it’s November already? With bonfire night inevitably upon us, here at Ableworld were getting into the spirit of it all - woolly jumpers, warming drinks by the food van, twizzling the sparklers and watching the well-choreographed fireworks light up the night sky.

What is bonfire night?

Every year on the 5th November, Bonfire night is a tradition where colourful firework displays and bonfires fill up the sky with spectrums of colour and sounds, to remember the Gunpower Plot by Guy Fawkes in 1605. It’s a time of year, people all over the UK meet up with friends and family to brave the cold weather, and enjoy a night of festivities together.

But when immersing yourself in the magic of the displays make sure you are aware of the risks and know how to keep you and your family safe this bonfire night.

  1. Dress appropriately – If you are attending a fireworks event make sure everyone is dressed for the occasion: seasonal jumpers, warm coats, boots, thick woolly socks and fluffy gloves all-round. And don’t forget an umbrella too – we do live in England after all.
  2. Protect your pets – If you have a furry family member, fireworks can make them extremely anxious and scared. So, make sure they are surrounded by blankets and toys, in a safe and comfortable room. Always close windows and curtains to help muffle the sound and blackout the flashes of the fireworks. You can also try and mask the sound of the bangs by turning the TV a little louder than usual.
  3. Children are drawn to bright things – ensure young children stay close to an adult and away from open flames or freshly lit fireworks (you don’t know which direction the fireworks will shoot off in)
  4. Practice fireworks safely – Make sure if you are building your own small fireworks display in your garden, you do it in a safe location away from trees, houses or any other hazards. You will most likely have neighbours so it’s always courteous and respectful to let them know about your plans. In some instances, local councils do not permit private displays so always check in advance.
  5. Take care of yourself – Fireworks create smoke and a bitter scent that blankets across the ground. If you have asthma, heart problems or any respiratory difficulties it can be hard to withstand the smoke and chemicals in the air – so it’s best to avoid fireworks displays and enjoy them from the comfort of your living room window.

Staying at home this year? If you are deciding to stay indoors this bonfire night, what better and safer way to light up a room, than with a pick of our lighting products range at Ableworld. The smell of burning coal in your fireplace, hot chocolate and your favourite book - silhouetted in a warming yellow reading light on a cold Autumnal evening.

Browse our full collection of lighting products here.

Have a safe and enjoyable bonfire night from everyone at Ableworld!

Ableworld shout out to public in help of relaunched Christmas Shoebox Appeal

This entry was posted in General October 28, 2022

Ableworld Donate Shoeboxes to Elderly

Ableworld is shouting out to the public to help them with their re-launch of their Christmas Shoebox Appeal this year. Ableworld are proud to have previously supported various care homes and hospitals in the local community for a number of years.

Many people experience Christmas alone and Ableworld want to try and help by collecting shoeboxes filled with gifts, to show that someone cares. Shoeboxes can contain whatever you think someone would like ranging from puzzle books, hot chocolate, biscuits, warm socks and slippers to homemade gifts - the list is endless but please they do suggest no alcohol.

In previous years Ableworld have been truly overwhelmed with the response from the general public and have been rushed off their feet, collecting boxes in-store and at Head Office for the appeal. Last year Ableworld were able to donate over 100 shoeboxes to care homes in their local community.

If you would like to help, please drop off your shoebox in your local Ableworld store by Wednesday 14th December. We will then arrange to distribute them to a local care home or hospital before Christmas Day.

Lets make this Christmas extra special to all of those around us!

Single Vs Dual Motor Riser Recliner Chairs: What's the Difference?

This entry was posted in General October 21, 2022

Adlington Prestige Riser Recliner Lifestyle

There's a lot to choose from when it comes to choosing a riser recliner chair that’s right for you, and it can all feel quite confusing. Remember, at Ableworld our team are on always on hand to answer your queries and help you to find the perfect motorised riser recliner to meet your needs, to boost your independence and provide comfort you desire.

One question we’re often asked is ‘What's difference between a single or dual motor riser recliner chair?’

In this article we’re going to look at the key differences between the two and highlight the pros and cons.

Firstly, what is a single motor riser recliner?

As their name suggests, single motor chairs have one motor which powers both the back and footrest at the same time. This means when the backrest is reclined the footrest rises automatically.

Pros:

  • Cost-effective: single motor rise and recliner chairs are cheaper than dual motor, which can make them slightly more popular than dual.
  • Single controls: due the back and footrest operate together the hand controls are limited to just two buttons. This can be an important consideration if your relative lives with Dementia.

Cons:

  • Limited adjustment: The backrest and footrest cannot be operated independently which limits the ability to find a comfortable seating position.
  • Reliability: because a single motor has to do all the work it’s under increased strain which may affect the reliability.

So, what’s a dual motor riser recliner?

With dual motor recline chairs, two or more motors are used to power the back and footrest independently. Some models have a third motor to power the rise function which tips the seat base forward allowing the occupant to stand up.

Pros:

  • Greater flexibility: because the backrest and footrest can be moved independently it’s much easier to find a comfortable seating position.
  • Reliability: dual motors are under less stress so the risk of the chair failing is reduced.

Cons:

  • Complex controls: each motor has its own set of controls, there are double the number of buttons on the control pad.
  • More expensive: dual motors tend to be more expensive. But if your loved one has limited movement, it’s really worth spending the extra to ensure they are comfortable.

Single motor Vs Dual motor riser recliner, which is the best?

The right option for you will depend on the condition of your loved one and what features you desire. At Ableworld, we offer a huge range of motorised riser recliner chairs, often with a choice of single and dual motor within the same make and model. Remember, it's vital that you have a well-fitted chair with the right features, to ensure you get optimum benefit from your new riser recliner. We advise speaking to one of our team to talk through your individual needs before making a decision.

Buying a riser recliner is an investment so you want to be sure you're buying the right one to meet your needs, both now and in the future, but we're here to help you make the right choice for you!

If you would like more information about our range of riser recliner chairs or if you would like to arrange a FREE home demonstration get in touch with our mobility team on 0800 019 1880.

This year, Ableworld is helping to raise money and awareness of the disease by hosting a variety of events held in-store and at Head Office, such as bake sales and tuck shops.

It's the most common cancer for women in the UK with statistic reporting that 55,000 women are diagnosed each year and 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime.

Leading healthcare professionals encourage both men and women to check for changes in the breast or sings of the disease on a monthly basis, as it's important that everyone is aware of the signs and symptoms.

What to look out for?

Usually there is a good chance of recovery if the disease is detected at an early stage, which is why it's vital that everyone checks their breasts regularly for changes. Some of the more common signs of breast cancer are:

  • A lump or swelling in the breast, upper chest or armpit
  • A change to the skin, such as puckering or dimpling
  • A change in the colour of the breast – the breast may look red or inflamed
  • A nipple change, for example it has become inverted
  • Rash or crusting around the nipple
  • Unusual discharge from either nipple
  • Changes in size or shape of the breast

Everyone will have their own way of touching and looking for changes. Get used to checking regularly and be aware of anything that's new or different for you. Check your whole breast area, including up to your collarbone (upper chest) and armpits.

If you're worried about breast health or breast cancer you can speak to our breast care nurses for free by calling 0808 800 6000 or by email.

Money saving tips

This entry was posted in General October 14, 2022

Ableworld riser recliner chair

With the current climate of the world, our finances certainly are at the forefront of everyone’s mind. For many older people, the rising cost of living is making it increasingly more difficult to relax and live a comfortable life and trying to find the balance between necessities and luxuries can be an uphill climb - so here at Ableworld we have come up with a few money-saving tips which can hopefully ensure you are living life to the fullest, without spending more than your worth.

Cut out non-essentials

Now this doesn’t mean cutting out everything that’s enjoyable in your life, but rather kicking a habit to the curb like smoking or drinking. Or limiting your TV subscriptions to one provider. This can help more than you realise as those pennies do add up.

Spread the cost over monthly payments

We know bills are a necessary evil.

Did you know? At Ableworld, we offer finance options to suit everyone’s situation – this is because we understand most our products are a need rather than a want, so we want to make purchasing these items as easy and stress-free as possible. With flexible repayment options, you can stay independent for longer without it breaking it bank.

Use discounts when available

Most retailers will have regular sales and discount codes, so make sure you utilise these offers. You can scout the internet on discount or coupon sites. You can also use vouchers that come through your door or that you receive through signing up to your favourite store’s newsletters.

We currently have amazing savings on a range of products in our Autumn sale, shop online and in-store now – or sign up to our newsletter so you never miss a sale or discount from us again (scroll to the bottom our website).

Buy second-hand

If you desperately need something – consider buying the item second-hand or ex-display. There are so many pre-owned providers, that offer amazing alternatives to buying new, for a fraction of the price.

We offer ex-demonstration wheelchairs, scooters, riser recliners and more - which are a much more pocket-friendly option for buying a much-needed item.  Visit your local Ableworld store for more details.

None of us can predict the future – but we can definitely make sure we are as comfortable as possible for whatever may come. We hope these tips help you in these testing times, and know if you ever want a comforting chat, our friendly team are always on hand in our stores or at the end of the phone at 01270 627111.

Take care, Ableworld.
