Spring will be here before you know it and if you want your garden blooming with flowers and greenery for the warmer months ahead, its best to start your garden preparation as early in spring as possible. We understand during the past few months many of you have been cooped up inside, hibernating next to the fire - but now’s the time to brave the weather, put on some warm clothes and get your hands dirty. And it is also the perfect opportunity to remain active and get some of your daily vitamin D.
The first thing you need to do is sort out your garden as it currently is. Over the winter and autumn months your garden will have accumulated a lot dead leaves, weeds, or just unwanted growth that you want to get rid of. So, a garden clean-up is an essential first step to sorting out your garden for spring. Take the time to prune your plants. Trim down shrubs and hedging to promote some new growth. All you need to do is, get a rake, some gardening gloves and your Ableworld classic reacher and begin cutting the stems to a more manageable length.
Next step is ensuring you have all your gardening equipment handy. If you need to buy or order new tools now is the best time to do this. Make sure your lawn mower is in working order as you’ll be using this a lot over the next few months, and let’s face it your lawn is probably not looking its best right now. Start with raking your lawn and adding holes to the dry or sparse patches which need extra TCL, adding lawn seeds and regularly watering it. To help with this, we have our handy garden kneeler which is the perfect garden aid when you’re trying to get your garden spring ready. It features a soft foam pad which is raised off the ground so it protects the knees against exposure to wet ground and against injury from sharp stones.
Now it’s the fun part, experiment with flowers and plant your seeds and crops then watch them grow in the months ahead. Take your time with it all, getting your garden spring ready is something the majority of us feel behind or out of touch with. A bit of spring sunshine and we’ll all be ready to get outside and enjoy the spring air.
Thanks for taking the time to read these tips – hopefully they were helpful and encouraging.
Ableworld strives to support local charities where possible and Random Act of Kindness Day gives us the opportunity to offer support and kindness to others in need.
The past two years have been especially hard for those who find themselves homeless in the UK. Following the pandemic amongst various other events that happened over the past two years, Ableworld has aimed to spread kindness and positivity in local communities and hopefully make a difference.
Amongst many other gestures within the company, Store Manager Abdul from Ableworld Reading decided to help local Homeless Shelter, New Beginnings. “It’s been great to contribute to such a great cause,” Abdul said, “It’s a great feeling to know that our donation will provide over 500 people across Reading with comfort and warmth over the next few months”.
New Beginnings' aim is to prevent poverty and financial hardship of people in Reading. They provide clothing, food and essential items to enable independent living and want to support people at what can be a very difficult time in their lives. New Beginnings were extremely grateful for the sock donation as these socks will go a long way in helping people in the local area.
There are many local homeless charities around the UK and we would encourage everyone to think about making a donation of whatever they can to support them. Anyone, from any walk of life, could find themselves reliant on a homeless charity and it’s fantastic what these volunteers do to help others.

A healthy lifestyle and mobility, matter so much not only for our physical self but also our mental wellbeing. There are so many tasks we take for granted – I’m guilty of this too: this could be as simple as reaching up to the top cupboard in the kitchen or trying to get up the stairs or reading your medication prescription label. But here at Ableworld, we understand that some elderly and disabled people require a little extra assistance when it comes to mobility.
Mobility aids are the perfect solution as they are intended to promote safety and independence for those who need that extra support in their everyday routines. For many people with either a temporary or long-term mobility issue, they have become an integral part of their life. They can come in many forms from Riser Recliners to Wheelchairs to Stairlifts to Grab Rails and Ramps etc.
From the minute you wake up you should feel empowered to embrace your independence and for people with limited mobility, a good night’s sleep is vital. What’s a better addition to your home than an Adjustable Bed? We recommend the Calverley Electric Adjustable Bed, it promotes good posture and spinal support and can provide a great night’s sleep which results in better overall health. The bed is controlled by a 6-button handset which allows you to choose from a range of positions to make sure you are as comfortable as possible.
Ensuring your make the most of what your body CAN do, instead of focussing on what you can’t – will help improve both your mind and mental well-being. Whether you're using a Walker or a Mobility Scooter, both are efficient ways you can greatly improve your fitness and mobility. It can help you find your lost freedom - spend more time outside, hang out with friends, or go to the supermarket. And the Rascal 388XL Mobility Scooter is a great all-rounder for just that, it is legal to go on the road but is only mid-size so navigating around the park and on pavements, is perfect for too. Also comes with a full lighting kit which allows you to drive at night or in dull visibility conditions, to give everyone better piece of mind.
The kitchen is also a part of the house that can bring about its own challenges and can be a safety concern for any loved ones – but encouraging a safer way of handling mundane tasks can make a world of difference for those who need it. We have many Kitchen Aids at Ableworld that can make life easier and alleviate the stress of doing these activities. The Uccello tipping kettle for one is perfect for those who struggle to lift the kettle - and we all know how much tea or coffee is a staple to anyone’s morning routine. Or the Spill not Jar Bottle Opener is great to assist those who need a little extra grip, designed with three inverted cones which are used to hold a container steady, such as drinks bottles or child-proof medicine containers. And a further three opener cones are included to make opening tricky jars easier. The base has a rubber bottom, which helps to stop the opener from moving on smooth surfaces. The base can be fixed permanently onto a workshop or contained in a drawer ready for use.
We are currently running our winter sale promotion, so it’s the perfect time to pick up that extra piece of support that’s going to make your everyday tasks easier. Because mobility really does matter. And we encourage people to embrace their independence and try to stay mobile for as long as possible.
This cold weather just keeps rolling in, the cold air just has a habit of coming back around. Winter can bring about times of great concern for your mobility and independence, but here at Ableworld, we have committed ourselves to ensure you have increased independence for as long as possible – even in the winter months.
We have a vast range of products to ensure just that:
Our Hurrycane Wide Base walking stick has a 3-point contact base providing maximum stability on the majority of terrains. The base also incorporates a 360-degree pivot head which allows the user full flexibility ad stability when turning. This cane will help get through the toughest weather and ensure your mobility isn’t tainted this winter.
It’s also important to say visible as the nights close in much faster now - we recommend the hi-visibility slipover scooter bag. This strong and durable bag ensures your visibility isn’t compromised when going outside in the dark. It is even waterproof to protect its contents from the inevitable rain which is a daily occurrence living in the UK.
Motorised scooters are a highly effective way of staying mobile and not needing extra assistance this winter. And we know nighttime is the hardest time to stay safe – but even if you have to drive at night our recommendation for staying mobile is the Rascal 388XL, and it’s even fully fitted with a lighting kit so you can drive in dark, dull conditions. It’s narrow and compact for ease of manoeuvring. It also comes with a fully adjustable swivel seat which allows you to adopt the perfect seating position for your needs and the lift up tiller allows for easy transfer in and out of the seat. The wider tires allow you to travel more smoothly over uneven surfaces and snowy pavements.
I hope some of these products and tips will help you through and make this month just a little easier – we have so many more products that can help you too, shop online or pop into your local Ableworld store to find out more, or just to browse our collection. We also have our winter sale on right now – so you can shop your winter mobility products at sale prices. But more than anything check the weather forecast before you venture outside, and plan your journey carefully.
