National Vascular Disease Awareness Month 2022

This entry was posted in General September 26, 2022

National Vascular Awareness Month

This September is National Vascular Disease Awareness Month, supporters including healthcare professionals, healthcare businesses, individuals and their families and friends are encouraging everybody to Step It Up for September.

The understanding of vascular disease and its effects on lives, is often poor and the Circulation Foundation strives to highlight and promote awareness for vascular disease to the general public, so that everyone understands how important it is.

Vascular disease is the collective term for diseases of the arteries, veins and lymphatics. Every part of the body to which blood flows can be affected by it. It's as common as cancer and heart disease and accounts for 40% of deaths in the UK, many of which can be preventable.

There are three types of vascular disease, these are;

  • Arterial which includes Peripheral (PAD), Aneurysmal, Carotid, Stroke and Leg Ulcers
  • Venous which include Varicose Veins, Leg Ulcers and Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Lymphatic which includes Lymphoedema

Like any charity, the Circulation Foundation is wholly dependent on money from fundraising. The money raised goes towards funding and promoting research into the causes, treatment and prevention of vascular disease in the UK. Whilst also providing essential information to patients and their families, whilst raising awareness of vascular disease and the importance of healthy veins and arteries, to ensure we can lead longer, healthier lives.

There are a number of things you can do to lower your risk of developing vascular disease or complications such as wearing compression garments, taking good care of your skin, moving and exercising regularly, having a healthy diet and lifestyle, and using specialised massaging techniques.

National Vascular Disease Awareness Month is a great time to learn more about vascular disease, and how it affects your life and what can be done to support you. At Ableworld, we offer a range of products that might be able to help with vascular disease such as the Pedal Exerciser and Oedema Socks

Please click here to find out more, or if you're in need of support please get in touch with the Circulation Foundation.

Caring for your Mobility Scooter this Winter

This entry was posted in General September 19, 2022

Icy Road

We're coming into the dark, often bitterly cold, winter months and for those of you who are venturing out on your mobility scooters, this time of year can be somewhat challenging. From dark frozen mornings to wet winter days, the conditions aren't always ideal for those of you who are setting out on your scooters.

So, with that being said, we wanted to help you feel as confident as possible this winter, with a few helpful tips on how to keep your scooter in the best shape possible.

  • Keep Your Mobility Scooter Clean
Keeping your scooter dry after use in wet conditions will prove vital to the lifespan of your components. The same goes for keeping your scooter clean after use, especially on the framework. A quick wipe down after use shouldn't take a few minutes and should prevent any complex maintenance work in the long-run.
  • Fully Charge your Mobility Scooter
To make sure that the battery can maximise its power you must ensure its fully charged each time before using it. This applies for EVERY time the scooter has been used, even if its just for short journeys. Remember, 12 hours is the minimum charge time for a scooter battery, any less than this and the battery performance will reduce over time and eventually become unusable. For more information on How to Charge your Mobility Scooter Batteries please see one of our recent blogs.
  • Consistently Check your Mobility Scooter's Tyres
In slippery, icy conditions, it's especially important your tyres are regularly checked for general signs of wear and tear. Pneumatic tyres must have their pressure checked on a monthly basis if they are not fully inflated the likelihood of an accident increases.
  • Keep your Mobility Scooter Sheltered
The ideal place to store your mobility scooter is in a house, garage or shed. The main idea is that your scooter is kept dry to prevent components from rusting, especially in colder temperatures your battery will not perform as well, so keeping your scooter sheltered helps to prevent this.
  • Protect the Control Panel of your Mobility Scooter
Mobility scooters have electrical components so it's important to prevent water getting in where it shouldn't. Use a protective cover to shield your control panel and try your best to keep both of your scooters and more importantly yourself, dry!

At Ableworld, we have large range of mobility scooter accessories that are available to help protect you and your mobility scooter over those winter months, some of which include: Scooter Poncho, Scooter Cosy, Tiller Cover, Storage Covers, Scooterpac Canopy and many more.

Now we've covered the basics of how to ensure mobility scooters survive the winter months, it's important to emphasise the most important thing to ensure is personal safety. If you're venturing out into the dark, always wear high visibility clothing and wrap up warm, ensure your battery is fully charged, and that you have working headlights turned on.

With all the correct precautions in place, get up, get out, and get out there and enjoy the freedom your mobility scooter allows you!

If you are unsure of the health of your battery, tyre pressure or would like a professional, friendly service, then please contact your local Ableworld store, so we can ensure you're safe on your next journey.

World Heart Day 2022

World Heart Day 2022

Today is World Heart Day, and the World Heart Federation are asking the world to Use Heart for Every Heart.

World Heart Day informs people around the globe that cardiovascular disease (CVD) including heart disease and stroke, is the world's leading cause of death claiming 18.6 million lives each year, and highlights the actions that individuals can take to prevent and control CVD. It aims to drive action to educate people that by controlling risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet and physical activity, at least 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided.

World Heart Day is an opportunity for everyone to stop and consider how best to use heart for humanity, for nature, and for you. Beating cardiovascular disease (CVD) is something that matters to every beating heart.

Use Heart for Humanity, access to treatment and support for CVD varies widely across the world. Over 75% of CVD deaths occur in low-to-middle-income countries, but access can be an issue anywhere. By getting involved with global events as World Heart Day as well as local activities, we are empowered to spread awareness and help make a difference in the lives of all humankind

Use Heart for Nature, air pollution is responsible for 25% of all CVD deaths, taking the lives of 7 million people each year. Whether they are more immediate actions such as walking or cycling instead of travelling by car, or longer-term efforts such as supporting clean air legislation, each of us can contribute to a healthier planet in our own way.

Use Heart for You, psychological stress can double the risk of having a heart attack. Exercise, mediation, and getting enough quality sleep help to lower stress levels. By resisting the harmful coping mechanism and bad habits induced by stress, we can maximise our individual heart health.

Ableworld want to help make sure that everyone, everywhere can access the knowledge and tools they need to beat cardiovascular disease.

Refurbished Stairlifts

This entry was posted in General September 15, 2022

Lady and Gentleman with a Handicare 1100 Stairlift
Thinking about buying a stairlift? Don’t know which one to choose? Choose Reconditioned!

Stairlifts are designed for people who have limited mobility or a disability which means they can’t get up and down the stairs. So having a stairlift fitted at home, could for those people potentially mean the difference between continuing to live at home independently, or living in specialist accommodation.

We know money is tight at the minute and everyone is living within their means, but if your means are prohibiting you from getting up the stairs in your own home – a refurbished stairlift may just be the perfect option for you. We offer two refurbished stairlift models to suit whichever staircase you have in your home: straight stairlifts and curved stairlifts.

For a lot of people stairlift jargon can go over your head and be overwhelming (I often still get confused myself). So, we thought we’d break down the key questions we get asked all the time – so if you are considering purchasing a refurbished stairlift you fully understand the ins and outs.

What is a refurbished stairlift?

A refurbished or reconditioned stairlift is a model that has been used or pre-loved for a better word.  They are considered cheaper than new stairlifts, so are great for those on a budget and are looking for a lower price point.

How long will a refurbished product last compare to buying new one?

This all depends on the age of the stairlift at the time of purchase and the current use of the stairlift. While it is impossible to say how long a stairlift will operate for, depending on the make and model - the life expectancy ranges between 7-10 years when bought new, however, they do exceed. Ableworld reinstall reconditioned stairlifts up to 5/6 years old. This will ensure that the performance of the stairlift is to its best ability.

On average, how much cheaper might a refurbished product be than a new product?

For a new straight stairlift, you are looking at 65% off for a reconditioned model. For a new curved stairlift, you will find a 40% saving.

Are there any potential safety issues when purchasing refurbished products?

There are no issues, reconditioned stairlifts are tested throughout, when removed and re-installed, they have any essential parts replaced before they are re-installed. This ensures the performance is up to standard.

Do refurbished products come with a guarantee or warranty? If so, does it differ from warranties for new products?

All reconditioned stairlifts come with warranty included. This ranges between 3 months and 6 months, a lot of purchases we are able to give a 12-month warranty depending on the age of the reconditioned stairlift.

New stairlifts come with a standard 12-month warranty, also additional parts warranty that is standard from the manufacturers.

Buying a stairlift is a big decision so we don’t take it lightly – our stairlift team are available to assist you 24/7 with any queries you have, but also if you feel you have a question that you don’t feel we’ve answered in this blog please contact us. Or, you can book a FREE no obligation quote by clicking here.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Week 2022

This entry was posted in General September 13, 2022

Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Week 2022

Rheumatoid Arthritis also known as RA is an auto-immune disease that mainly attacks the synovial tissues within the joints. While many other individuals face pain, limited mobility, and other challenges related to arthritis, there's still so much to be learned about this condition.

To help raise awareness, Ableworld is joining other healthcare organisations to recognise Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Week this September. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) Awareness Week 2022 takes place between 13th and 19th September, and is an annual event to raise awareness of the condition.

What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

RA is a systemic disease, which means it can affect the whole body. It can attack organs such as the heart, the lungs, or other tissues like muscles, cartilages and ligaments. RA causes chronic swelling and pain that is sometimes severe. The condition is seen in women more than men, and affects approximately 1% of the UK population. It's a hidden disability, meaning that people do not always realise that sufferers are living with the disease. It can affect people of any age, and can either have an early onset, in teenage years or start at any time in an adult's life.

What are the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis?

The onset symptoms of RA include small joints like your fingers and toes are warm, stiff or swollen. These symptoms might come and go and you may think its nothing. Rheumatoid Arthritis flare-ups can last just a few days or a few weeks before they disappear again.

Did you know?

  • Out of every 100,000 people, 71 are diagnosed with RA every year
  • Women are two-to-three times more likely to get RA than men
  • Risks of heart attack or strokes increase by 60% one year after diagnosis

For many, increased physical activity can improve functioning and reduce pain by up to 40%. It's recommended that adults with arthritis should get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week or about 30 minutes of brisk walks, five days a week. For those who cannot walk for 30 minutes, short 10-minute walks throughout the day also help.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Week is a great time to learn more about arthritis, how it affects the people in your life and what can be done to support them. At Ableworld, we have numerous supports available that are designed to help limit pain for those living with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Please click here to find out more, or if you're in need of support and struggling to deal with the affects arthritis is having on your life please get in touch with the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society
