How much does it cost to run a Stairlift?

This entry was posted in General November 17, 2022

Lady and Gentleman on Stairlift

With energy prices around the country increasingly raising, it's natural for people to be concerned about how much their energy usage and cost is going to impact their overall bills. To put your mind at ease, we have answered some of the most common questions recently asked about energy usage and running costs of our stairlifts.

One of the biggest myths regarding stairlifts is that they have a very high running costs, but you'll be pleased to hear that Ableworld's stairlifts are energy-efficient and cost-effective.

On average an Ableworld stairlift costs around £10 per year to run, based on average 12 journeys per day.

How does a Stairlift work?

A stairlift has three basic components: the track, power pack and seat. All three of these are essential to the smooth running of a stairlift, other components can be added for user comfort.

Our stairlifts use a combination of battery and mains power. They contain two rechargeable 12-volt batteries that are continuously charged through charging points, also known as 'parking spots'. These charging points can be found on either the top or bottom of your staircase. Once you have used your stairlift, you will need use your remote control to place it into the 'parking spot' to charge.

Am I going to need to replace the batteries?

Our batteries should last around 3 years before they need to be replaced. All of our batteries are covered with a 30 day warranty and are fitted by our experienced and friendly team of Ableworld engineers.

We recommend that you only use our manufacturer-approved batteries and place your stairlift back on the 'parking spot' after every use. Leaving it off of your charging points for long periods of time can decrease your battery life.

To find out more about replacement batteries, contact our Stairlift department on 0800 014 9344.

If there's a power cut, will I be able to use my stairlift?

In the event of a power cut, you will not be able to charge your stairlift, but the batteries will enable you to do approximately 10 return journeys with a single charge.

We're here to help

If you have any questions about our stairlifts or their energy consumption, please get in touch with our friendly team or find your local Ableworld branch.

Ableworld set their sights on new Berkshire store

This entry was posted in General November 3, 2022

Here at Ableworld we are set to expand our UK store number with a new Mobility and Stairlift superstore located within the Newbury, Berkshire area. The new store will be located close to our already existing Reading store, to give a stronger mobility presence in the Berkshire area, and to be able to further support our existing Reading based customers.

As with our already existing 38 stores, the Newbury based store will include our vast range of mobility products, from Mobility Scooters and Powerchairs, to smaller daily living aids and continence care. There will also be in-house Engineers available to install, service & repair a range of Stairlifts and mobility equipment.

We are currently finalising the lease on the Berkshire property, with our set-up teams ready to then progress with the development, with the aim to open early in Spring.

There is also another potential store opening on the horizon, as we set to expand our presence around our existing Gloucester store also. This would allow us to reach customers further afield around the Cirencester and Cheltenham areas.

Our latest store announcements come as we recently relocated our Ableworld Wrexham store to a larger and more accessible premises within the town, which came as delight to our customers and staff. At Ableworld we continue to develop as we grow in store & employee numbers ahead of what is expecting to be a busy year ahead.

Keep safe this Bonfire Night

This entry was posted in General November 1, 2022

people watching the fireworks display

Can you believe it’s November already? With bonfire night inevitably upon us, here at Ableworld were getting into the spirit of it all - woolly jumpers, warming drinks by the food van, twizzling the sparklers and watching the well-choreographed fireworks light up the night sky.

What is bonfire night?

Every year on the 5th November, Bonfire night is a tradition where colourful firework displays and bonfires fill up the sky with spectrums of colour and sounds, to remember the Gunpower Plot by Guy Fawkes in 1605. It’s a time of year, people all over the UK meet up with friends and family to brave the cold weather, and enjoy a night of festivities together.

But when immersing yourself in the magic of the displays make sure you are aware of the risks and know how to keep you and your family safe this bonfire night.

  1. Dress appropriately – If you are attending a fireworks event make sure everyone is dressed for the occasion: seasonal jumpers, warm coats, boots, thick woolly socks and fluffy gloves all-round. And don’t forget an umbrella too – we do live in England after all.
  2. Protect your pets – If you have a furry family member, fireworks can make them extremely anxious and scared. So, make sure they are surrounded by blankets and toys, in a safe and comfortable room. Always close windows and curtains to help muffle the sound and blackout the flashes of the fireworks. You can also try and mask the sound of the bangs by turning the TV a little louder than usual.
  3. Children are drawn to bright things – ensure young children stay close to an adult and away from open flames or freshly lit fireworks (you don’t know which direction the fireworks will shoot off in)
  4. Practice fireworks safely – Make sure if you are building your own small fireworks display in your garden, you do it in a safe location away from trees, houses or any other hazards. You will most likely have neighbours so it’s always courteous and respectful to let them know about your plans. In some instances, local councils do not permit private displays so always check in advance.
  5. Take care of yourself – Fireworks create smoke and a bitter scent that blankets across the ground. If you have asthma, heart problems or any respiratory difficulties it can be hard to withstand the smoke and chemicals in the air – so it’s best to avoid fireworks displays and enjoy them from the comfort of your living room window.

Staying at home this year? If you are deciding to stay indoors this bonfire night, what better and safer way to light up a room, than with a pick of our lighting products range at Ableworld. The smell of burning coal in your fireplace, hot chocolate and your favourite book - silhouetted in a warming yellow reading light on a cold Autumnal evening.

Browse our full collection of lighting products here.

Have a safe and enjoyable bonfire night from everyone at Ableworld!
